A walkway that heaves or sinks is a tripping hazard. We dig out, compact a base, set edge restraint and finish with joint sand, the same steps we use on a driveway.
Walkways connect the parts of a yard: the driveway to the front door, the lanai to the pool, the patio to the side gate. Using the same paver or a matching border across those spaces makes the whole property look planned.
